Beijing 2008: German handballers on their way

By winning the World Championships at home in Cologne, the German handball team has earned its ticket for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing 2008, joining China, which, as the host country, qualifies automatically. This 29-24 victory against Poland is the third world title for Germany, the first two being in 1938 and 1978.

Current Olympic runners-up
With this ticket for the 2008 Games, the German handballers can hope to climb one step higher on the Olympic podium. In the final in Athens, they lost by two points to the Croatian team (26-24).

Continental qualification tournaments
12 teams will take part in the 2008 Olympic tournament. Thus, after these World Championships, the European, Asian, African and American confederations will organise a continental Olympic qualification tournament. The four winners will qualify for the Games in 2008. The six other teams, that will participate in Beijing, will qualify in Olympic qualification tournaments organised by the International Handball Federation (IHF).

Who will succeed Croatia?
The Olympic men’s handball tournament will be held from 9 August 2008 at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium, for the preliminaries, and the National Indoor Stadium for the semi-finals and the final. To find out who will succeed Croatia, we shall have to wait until 24 August 2008.
