Beijing 2008: Construction plans for Velodrome and Shooting Range
Construction of the Beijing Shooting Range and the Laoshan Velodrome will begin in December this year, and the two Olympic venues will become operational in the first half of 2006. The announcement was made by Zhang Lizeng, an official from the State General Administration of Sports, at a press conference held by the Beijing Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG).
11 design schemes
A total of 11 design schemes from domestic and international designers were entered in the competition for the two venues. Finally, design schemes by the Architectural Design Research Institute of the prestigious TsingHua University and the Guangdong Architectural Design Research Institute were picked out for the two venues, Zhang said.
General picture on construction
Also at the press conference, Liu Zhi, Deputy Director of BOCOG's Venue Planning and Construction Department, gave a general picture of the construction of Olympic venues and facilities. Liu said the design schemes, field clearing and demolishing of old buildings for the important venues had finished and that the relevant urban infrastructure work in the central area of the Olympic Green had been initiated.
First groups of partners
Yuan Bin, Deputy Director of BOCOG's Marketing Department, introduced the latest developments in the Marketing Programme. She said BOCOG was in the process of selecting the first group of partners. The selection process for four categories, namely automobile, banking, fixed telecommunications and mobile communications, will officially start this month.
