At a marketing launch ceremony in Beijing on Monday 1 September, the IOC President, Dr Jacques Rogge, and Mr Liu Qi, President of the Beijing 2008 Organising Committee (BOCOG), turned an ancient key symbolising the opening of China to the business world. Some 600 Chinese and international business leaders, officials, potential sponsors and media attended this launch.
In his speech on this occasion, IOC Marketing Commission Chairman Gerhard Heiberg described the importance of the launch: "Today is a significant day for future business opportunities in China linked to the 2008 Olympic Games. Through the preparation and celebration of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, we expect the marketing partnership between the business community and the Olympic Movement to reach new heights and generate a new level of benefits."
Support for Olympic sport
For his part, the IOC President underlined the importance of the marketing programme, which funds the costs of the Games and supports the development of Olympic sport and Olympic athletes around the globe. After television rights, the international and local marketing programmes are the second most important source of income for the Games organising committees and the IOC. International Sports Federations, National Olympic Committees and individual athletes also benefit substantially from this income.
