BEIJING 2008: BOCOG launches volunteer programme
The Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad 2008 – Beijing 2008 (BOCOG) launched its volunteer programme on 5 June. BOCOG expects to attract about 70,000 people.
The volunteers will help with spectator services, translation, transport, security, medical services and cultural activities. They will be recruited mostly from Beijing universities but also from other Chinese cities hosting events, as well as from abroad.
“A once-in-a-lifetime experience”
“It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, said. “Volunteers have one ideal: to promote the Olympic values and to prepare the best conditions for the athletes of the world to compete in a fair and peaceful competition.”
The Games of the XXIX Olympiad will take place from 8 to 24 August 2008. The Beijing Games will play host to 28 sports, with approximately 10,500 athletes expected to participate, and around 20,000 accredited media on site, ready to bring the Games to the world.
