BEIJING 2008: BOCOG Announces Olympic Torch Relay Route
The Organising Committee for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG) today announced the route and design of the Olympic Torch for the Beijing Olympic Games at a ceremony held in the China Millennium Monument in Beijing. Present at the launch were IOC President Jacques Rogge and Chairman of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Beijing Games Hein Verbruggen.
“Journey of Harmony”
The relay is expected to last 130 days and cover a distance of 137,000 kilometres, passing through five continents and visiting some of the principal points of the ancient Silk Road. With its theme, “Journey of Harmony”, and its slogan “Light the Passion, Share the Dream”, the 2008 Olympic Torch Relay will be an opportunity for BOCOG to share its Olympic message with the world.
Unique Party Atmosphere
Speaking at the launch ceremony, IOC President Rogge said, “When people follow the flame along the Olympic Torch Relay route they are always touched by the magic of Olympism. There is a unique party atmosphere wherever the Olympic flame passes, with crowds greeting the torchbearers with enthusiastic cheers.” He continued, “The entire experience leaves all those who have enjoyed it with a special memory. I have no doubt the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay will leave many extraordinary memories and create new dreams for people around the world.”
Also unveiled at the ceremony was the Olympic Torch that will be used to transport the flame across the globe from Olympia to the National Stadium in Beijing. The design of the Torch takes into account Chinese artistic heritage and technological expertise. The design of the aluminum Torch features traditional scrolls and a traditional Chinese design called “Lucky Cloud”. It stands 72 centimeters high and weighs 985 grams.
