Baseball qualifications for Athens 2004
Seven out of eight teams have already qualified during the continental qualifying competitions for the baseball tournament in Athens. Greece, as the host country, will make its debut on the Olympic baseball stage, joining Italy and the Netherlands, the first and second placed teams respectively at the European Olympic Qualification Tournament. Italy will be making its fourth appearance in the Olympic baseball tournament, while the Netherlands will participate for the third time.
Canada's Olympic debut
Cuba won the Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Panama, and will make its fourth consecutive Olympic baseball appearance. Canada, the second place team from this tournament, will be making its Olympic baseball debut. Japan and Chinese Taipei will represent Asia in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games as a result of respectively winning the gold and silver medals at the Asian Championship. Japan will be participating in the Olympic baseball tournament for the fourth time and Chinese Taipei is making its second appearance, the last being in 1992.
South Africa or Australia
The eighth team will come from either Africa or Oceania. South Africa, the winner of the All Africa Games Baseball Tournament, will play the winner of the Oceania Championship in a playoff at the beginning of 2004.
The fourth Olympic baseball tournament will take place in Athens during the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad. The baseball competition will be held at the Hellinikon Olympic Complex from 15 to 25 August.
