Athletes around the world celebrate #1yeartogo to Buenos Aires 2018
With one year to go to Buenos Aires 2018, the first celebrations have kicked off in the Argentinian capital, and athletes from around the globe have shared their enthusiastic video messages to mark the final countdown to the Youth Olympic Games, which will take place from 6 to 18 October 2018.
Argentinian sailing legend and Olympic champion Santiago Lange also sent a message to encourage the young athletes: “One year of hard training for sure will make a lot of difference, so I wish all the sailors all the very best to get there.” He continued: “I am a little bit jealous - in the good old days the Youth Olympic Games didn’t exist and I think it’s a great, great idea and an incredible event and I wish [the athletes] all the best and welcome to Buenos Aires.”
The video of all the messages will be shared by Buenos Aires 2018 across all its social media accounts as well as those of the athletes, International Federations and National Olympic Committees. Meanwhile in Buenos Aires, the party got started to mark the final 12 months to the Games with a celebration at the infamous Obelisco landmark in the heart of the city – the location of the Opening Ceremony on 6 October next year. President of the Organising Committee and IOC Member Gerardo Werthein was joined by fellow IOC Member Li Lingwei, who chairs the IOC Coordination Commission, and Mayor of Buenos Aires Horacio Rodriguez Larreta. Olympic champions Pedro Ibarra, Cecilia Carranza and Santiago Lange were also in attendance.Only one year to go until the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018. Buenos Aires 2018 is the third edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games. The event will feature almost 4,000 top athletes of equal numbers of men and women between the ages of 15 and 18 from 206 countries. The athletes will compete in 32 sports, among them some new additions and formats such as breaking, karate, sport climbing, roller sports, BMX freestyle park and kiteboarding, to name a few.
