Applicant cities for the 2014 Games: drawing of lots for the order of presentation

The IOC Executive Board today drew lots to determine the order of presentation for the Applicant Cities for 2014. The following order will be applied for all Olympic meetings or events: Sochi (Russian Federation), Salzburg (Austria), Jaca (Spain), Almaty (Kazakhstan), PyeongChang (Republic of Korea), Sofia (Bulgaria), and Borjomi (Georgia).
Seven Applicant Cities
The seven Applicant Cities, which recently attended an information seminar in Lausanne, are hoping to stage the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014. The Winter Games in 2006 and 2010 will be organised by Turin and Vancouver respectively.
Two phases and eight stages
Phase 1, known as the candidature acceptance procedure, consists of a detailed study by the IOC of each city’s ability to organise the Olympic Winter Games in 2014. The cities are asked to complete a questionnaire, and an IOC Working Group will then study their answers against a number of criteria (listed below) in order to help the Executive Board members select the cities which will become Candidate Cities and go through to the second phase of the process.
-          1 February 2006: Applicant Cities’ replies to the IOC questionnaire
-          February 2006: Observers’ Programme in Turin during the XX Olympic Winter Games
-          21-23 June 2006: Acceptance of Candidate Cities by the IOC Executive Board
In Phase 2, known as the candidature procedure, the Candidate Cities will be invited to submit their candidature file, which is a detailed description of their Olympic plans, and to prepare for a visit by the IOC Evaluation Commission. This Commission will undertake a technical analysis of each candidature and then produce a report, which will be published one month before the host city election and sent to the IOC members for study.
-          23 June 2006: Candidature Procedure and Questionnaire sent to Candidate Cities/NOCs
-          10 January 2007: Candidature files submitted to the IOC
-          February/March 2007: Visits to Candidate Cities by the IOC Evaluation Commission
-          June 2007: Publication of the Evaluation Commission report
