Afghan athletes train in Iran
Olympic Solidarity is working closely with the Afghan National Olympic Committee to identify ten athletes who have the technical level to qualify for, and participate in, the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens. The athletes are training in the coming weeks in Iran alongside the Iranian National Team.
Ten athletes in four sports
In a true show of solidarity, the NOC of the Islamic Republic of Iran has generously agreed to host and train the Afghan athletes alongside their national teams. The national Afghan coaches in each sport have accompanied the athletes to Tehran to assist them in their training and during the qualification competitions. The sports represented are athletics, wrestling, boxing and taekwondo.
Next step: qualification competitions
All the athletes are due to take part in their respective qualification competitions over the next couple of months and, hopefully, qualify for the Athens Olympic Games.
IOC delegation in Iran
A delegation composed of representatives from the IOC, the Olympic Council of Asia and the National Olympic Committee of Afghanistan travelled to Tehran to meet with the National Olympic Committee of the Islamic Republic of Iran and to discuss the training of the Afghan athletes who are preparing for the Athens Olympic Games. They also had the opportunity to meet with the Afghan athletes and coaches and follow their training.
