A taste of the Paralympic Games
Today, 16 of the best athletes for the Paralympic Games will compete in two impressive events at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. Shortly before the men’s 100m semi-finals, the athletes will demonstrate their extraordinary skills in the men’s 1,500m wheelchair and the women’s 800m wheelchair. The competition gives a taste of the Paralympic Games, which will take place in Athens from 17 to 28 September 2004.
Fifteen sports shared with Olympic programme
Fifteen sports on the Paralympic programme are shared with the Olympic Games: archery, athletics, wheelchair basketball, cycling, equestrian, wheelchair fencing, 5-a-side football, 7-a-side football, judo, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair tennis and volleyball.
Four “unique” sports
The four “unique” sports that are played at the Paralympic Games are: boccia, goalball, powerlifting and wheelchair rugby.
Paralympic Torch Relay
On 9 September, the Paralympic Torch will be lit for the ninth time in history – and this time it will be in Athens. Its route will take it throughout Attica, passing through 54 municipalities and covering a distance of 410km. Six hundred and eighty torchbearers will share its light and the values of strength, pursuit and noble competition.
Opening Ceremony on 17 September
On 17 September, the Paralympic Flame will offer its light to the Olympic Stadium, in an Opening Ceremony that will inspire the world to celebrate the first Paralympic Games in Greece.
