A double Olympic champion at the Museum
Twenty years after winning two gold medals at the XIV Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo, bobsledder Wolfgang Hoppe recently visited Switzerland and… the Olympic Museum.
Bobsledders meeting bobsledder
He was the guest, with two of his race partners of the time, of Silvio Giobellina, former World Champion and several times European and Swiss four-man bob champion, who, in the Swiss mountains, these days rents out chalets and tepees, and organises Alpine mule rides and four-man bob start competitions.
The Sarajevo champions
In 1984 in Sarajevo, in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, Wolfgang Hoppe from the ex-East Germany won two gold medals in the two-man and four-man bob events. Silvio Giobellina, gold medallist in 1982 at the World Championships, took the bronze.
Twenty years already…
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of these medals, the friendly Swiss bobsledder invited Wolfgang Hoppe’s team to stay in Leysin in the Vaud Alps, where he now lives and which he promotes.
…and an exhibition
Silvio also borrowed from the Olympic Museum collection torches, sports equipment and film to set up a mini exhibition on the Sarajevo Games in a hotel in the resort.
