Close to 24,000 Swiss school pupils from 92 schools in Canton Vaud got a surprise this month when they opened their end-of-year exam papers to find questions themed around the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Lausanne 2020.
Four of their eight exams shared the common Lausanne 2020 theme for years 6, 8 and 10. The annual end of year cantonal reference (ECR) exams harmonises the teaching requirements across the canton and provides teaching staff with indications of the pupils’ progress.
As part of the math’s exam there were activities and exercises entitled “YOG in Leysin”, “Excursion to Champéry”, “Skating Rink”, “Curling” and “Medals”. The French dictation was a text on the Lausanne 2020 YOG.
“The idea of having Lausanne 2020 as the main topic originated in 2017. The ECR exams are always linked to a text on a particular subject. In maths too, there is generally a main theme. The choice of theme is down to the working group that sets the exams. This is the first time that there has been one topic for all the ECR exams,” said Philippe Linder, Head of Pupil and School System Assessment of the Education Department.
