Systematic review of the Olympic programme
In November 2002, the IOC Session in Mexico City approved the principle of a systematic review of the Olympic programme in order to ensure it remained relevant for future generations. The Olympic Programme Commission was mandated to lead the process after each edition of the Olympic Games. In order to fulfil this mission, the Commission developed a set of criteria which was approved by the Session to be used in assessing each sport.

Evaluation criteria
Following the review of the 2012 Summer Olympic programme in Singapore in July 2005, the present review, whose objective is to determine the sports programme for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, used the same list of 33 criteria but adapted it to the particularities of the Winter Games programme. The result of this review is reflected in this report, which is structured according to the International Federations, in the order in which they appear in the Olympic Charter.
