1st Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012: Four cities hand in their candidatures files


Harbin (China), Innsbruck (Austria), Kuopio (Finland), and Lillehammer (Norway)* have handed in their Candidature Files for the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) to be held in 2012, respecting the deadline. “We are very pleased to have four candidates for the 1st Winter YOG ever”, commented IOC President Jacques Rogge on the confirmation of these candidatures.

The four cities prepared their Candidature Files by replying to the IOC questionnaire and providing operational and financial information.

A panel of experts will analyse their replies and provide a report to the IOC Executive Board that will establish a shortlist of Candidate Cities to be further assessed by an IOC Evaluation Commission. The election by postal vote of the Host City of the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games will take place in November 2008. The result will be announced in December. The calendar in detail:

One thousand athletes compete in seven sports

One thousand athletes will take part in the Winter Youth Olympic Games and compete in seven Olympic sports: skiing, ice-hockey, biathlon, curling, bobsleigh, luge and figure skating.  The age groups participating in a sport or discipline will vary between 14 and 18 years old. All young athletes will also participate in an attractive educational and cultural programme, highlighting all possible activities linked to the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.
