“Youth – the future of the Olympic Movement”

“The youth of today is the future of the Olympic Movement.” With these words, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge concluded his opening speech at the first international Olympic forum devoted to young people, sport and peace in Africa, which is currently being held in Brazzaville (Congo).
A sporting festival for the people
This forum is the first of its kind in Africa. It underlines the important role that youth and sport can play in the development of a society. “More than just a meeting of those working for a culture of peace on our continent, this forum aims to be a sporting festival for the people”, announced the President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso, in his welcome message. The IOC President also had a private meeting with President Nguesso.

Respect, friendship and excellence
The promotion of the Olympic values, such as respect, friendship and excellence, is at the heart of the various presentations in this forum. “These values are an essential vector for sport, and enable it to play its educational role to the full”, underlined the IOC President.

Pérec, Fredericks
The forum has also included several sports activities, such as the race for peace, an initiation to athletics and football and handball matches organised throughout the city. To enliven these activities, international athletics stars, such as Marie-Josée Perec and Frank Fredericks, joined in the fun.
