IOC President Thomas Bach does the Haka

IOC President Thomas Bach received an unorthodox welcome, “Maori style”, during a visit to the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Village on 21 August.

A group of young New Zealand athletes, all wearing the all-black attire with which they are synonymous, put on an impressive rendition of the Ka Maté Haka, the traditional Maori war dance that is performed by New Zealand teams before sporting competitions.

And then, to his obvious delight, the IOC President was given a quick lesson in the basics of the Haka himself, which he said would certainly come in handy in the future.

“I’m going to start the next IOC Board meeting with a Haka,” he joked. “The meeting will be very easy after that!”
