"A moment of universality and sporting excellence"

IOC President Rogge addressed himself in the last edition of the Olympic Village Newspapers to the athletes that have competed in the Athens Games:

“Dear Athletes,

Here we are at the end of the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad, which will remain in the history of the Olympic Movement as a moment of universality and sporting excellence.
For 16 days, we have followed you and shared your joys and sorrows.

Performances and challenges
Through your performances and the challenges to which you have risen, you have become not only champions, but also – and above all – examples for the next generation. Continue to be ambassadors for sport which is more pure and credible, which refuses doping, which believes in generosity, and which advocates respect for others and solidarity. Because, without you, there would simply be no Olympic Games, and their success inevitably comes through you.

Thanks to thousands of volunteers
I would also like to thank the Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (ATHOC) and the thousands of volunteers for their legendary hospitality “filoxenia” and their remarkable dedication, which have made your stay in the Olympic Village, as well as mine, an unforgettable memory.

Emotion and passion
All together, we have shared in the emotion and passion generated by the Olympic Games, this universal rendez-vous symbolised by tolerance, peace and friendship.
I wish you all a good trip back to your respective homes.

See you in Beijing
See you in Beijing in four years’ time to celebrate the Games of the XXIX Olympiad!
