“Marathon” - A film by Carlos Saura

Where: Swiss Film Archives, Paderewski room
Date: 25 September at 8.30 p.m.

The film is structured around the men’s marathon at the Barcelona 1992 Games. The filmmaker captures the testing of the body, which is sometimes harmonious and sometimes painful.
The athletes are depicted in common humanity, wavering between exaltation and exhaustion.
The lyricism of the formal composition is underscored by the magnificent musical pieces by Alejandro Masso, Xavier Montsalvatge, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Angelo Badalamenti, and Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé.

This screening is part of the cultural and sports programme for the Winter Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 (9-22 January), Lausanne en Jeux !
Before and during the YOG, documentaries, and fiction and Olympic films will be shown to the public to demonstrate the close links that have always united sport and cinema, such as Marathon by C. Saura (1993).
But also, to name but a few: Olympia by Leni Riefenstahl (1938); 13 Days in France by Claude Lelouch and François Reichenbach (1968); and the collective film Visions of Eight by Miloš Forman, Arthur Penn, John Schlesinger and Mai Zetterling among others (1973).

After 20 years of work, the International Olympic Committee completed the restoration of the most important part of this outstanding patrimony, which comprises around 100 long and short titles.
The Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage, in association with the Swiss Film Archive, is pleased to screen a selection on the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games.
