Tatjana Hüfner: ‘Ask me anything!’

Hi everyone! I am very excited and proud to be an Athlete Role Model for Lausanne 2020. It will be a completely new experience for me, but I’m looking forward to spending some time with all of you during the Games. Having competed in luge for over 20 years, I have experienced the full spectrum of emotions – from the highs to the lows. Hopefully I can provide you all with some inspiration for being a competitor and for your lives after sport.

  • Tatjana Hüfner is one of the most successful lugers in history, winning gold, silver and bronze medals for Germany at the Olympic Winter Games, as well as five singles world titles and five successive overall World Cup crowns.
  • Having retired last year, Tatjana will now be attending the Winter YOG Lausanne 2020 as an Athlete Role Model.
  • She is welcoming all of you to approach her with any questions you have during the Games.

I think the YOG are a huge opportunity for those of you who are taking part. You will be able to experience so many things that can help you throughout the whole of your sports careers and beyond.

I have followed the YOG since the first winter edition in Innsbruck in 2012, and lots of the young athletes who had the chance to take part since then have told me about the great experiences they had. Now you all have the opportunity to enjoy these experiences too!

Learn from us!

I think having Athlete Role Models is a great idea, as it enables all of you to connect with experienced athletes who you can learn from. In my own career, I know that a young athlete can learn so much from older athletes. When I was young, I tried to learn from everybody. I think everyone has something that they can do quite well and that you can learn from. The difficulty is analysing what is important and how it can work for you, in your own special situation.

Stay focused
There’s not long to go until the YOG, but many of you may still be competing in the weeks ahead. If that’s the case, then that is where your focus should be; you need to concentrate on the events you’re competing in and not think too much ahead to the YOG.

Relax and be happy
When you get to Lausanne and St Moritz, you will have to recognise that there will be much more interest in you than perhaps you are used to. But don’t let this worry you; just try to relax and be happy about being there at the Games. Then you can focus on everything that you have learnt in the last few years to get to this point.

Keep working hard
Just because you have made it to the YOG doesn’t mean you can stop working. You should always be thinking about what you can do to get better. This should never stop. Especially in luge, there are so many things you can work on – athletically, mentally and mechanically with the sled.

Come and speak to me
We are all different, so there is no advice that will work for everyone; it is very individual. But during the YOG, I want you all to come to me and ask me whatever you want. I will try to answer everything!
