Five things to do with your free time in Lausanne!

Whether it’s eating fondue and Swiss chocolate or taking advantage of free entry to The Olympic Museum, there are plenty of things to check out in the host city when you have a break from competition…

 Do some sightseeing

If the stunning scenery that surrounds Lausanne isn’t Instagram-worthy enough for you, then there are plenty of other sights to enjoy throughout the city. Place de la Palud is definitely worth a visit. This pretty 9th-century medieval market square lies in the heart of Lausanne’s Old Town and features a colourful fountain and a unique clock that trots out a series of historical figurines at the stroke of every hour from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

 Stock up on chocolate

Hands up who likes chocolate! Well, the Swiss have been renowned chocolate makers for around 200 years, giving you the perfect excuse to indulge in some sweet treats from one of Lausanne’s many incredible chocolatiers. Try the chocolate eggs or praline strips from La Chocolatière de Mon-Repos, the organic and fair-trade offerings from Durig, or the chocolate-dipped dried fruits from Blondel!

 Check out Lausanne en Jeux

This awesome free festival will be taking place throughout the YOG – bringing the worlds of sport and culture together with an exciting programme of events that includes concerts, shows and the chance to try out some new sports. One of the highlights is sure to be BodyCity – a high-tech show that combines video mapping, music, dance and urban sport. There are also loads of workshops covering activities as diverse as curling, bobsleigh, graffiti, urban dance and video game design.

Try some Swiss food

The Swiss are almost as famous for their cheese as they are for their chocolate, so be sure to try out some Gruyère, Emmental and raclette, not to mention the traditional fondue that involves dipping bread in a melted pot of delicious cheese. If cheese isn’t your thing, try some of the local cured meats or perhaps some rösti – thinly grated potatoes that are pan-fried until crisp and golden. Yum!

Explore The Olympic Museum

Throughout the YOG, entry to The Olympic Museum will be completely free for all athletes and their family and friends! So don’t miss your chance to explore the history of the Games through interactive exhibits and get up close to loads of inspirational items, including equipment used by some of the best athletes ever.
