I spent a long time looking for a job I could combine perfectly with my sport of bobsleigh. With the assistance of the Swiss Olympic Athlete Career Programme, I began an internship at a well-known Swiss confectionery in the spring of 2013.

Last year, from April to October, I again worked with the chocolate maker’s quality assurance and development teams. With flexible working hours, the job actually allowed me to prepare in the best possible way for the upcoming season.

When autumn came and the season’s start was near, I exchanged my white lab coveralls for a streamlined racing suit. In the early part of the season, I herniated my disc. Forced rest made me take several weeks off.

However, I recovered in good time. I had a career day during the two-man bobsleigh event at the European Championships in St Moritz, which also counts as a World Cup event. My teammate Beat Hefti and I started the race with a great deal of uncertainty, but we knew we could be fast on this course. Still, to finish in the number one spot on the board surprised even us! Being European champions and World Cup winners was an amazing feeling.

One week later, we entered the two-man bobsleigh competition at the World Championships in Igls, Austria. After two runs we were in fourth place, right in the middle of the contest for a medal!

On the third run, we had an almost perfect performance, moving us up to third place. We defended this position on the final run and delightedly received our bronze medals at the ceremony in Innsbruck’s old town. I had the most ecstatic feeling come over me then. To win an Olympic or World Championship medal: that’s the highest goal you can achieve in sport.

After the season is finished in the spring, I look forward to taking off my racing suit and changing back into my white lab coveralls. I don’t yet know which company I will be working for, but I hope that I will be able to achieve the same kind of comeback in my working career as I did in my sporting career.
