As an athlete, your coach is one of the most important people in your life. As well as being a teacher and a mentor, your coach will be there to motivate you, comfort you, advise you, challenge you, prepare you and support you.

Your coach will likely be the person who has the biggest influence on your sporting performance, so if you want to achieve your very best, it’s important that you have the right person behind you.

There are many things you need to consider when choosing a coach. How knowledgeable are they? How experienced are they? How much success have they had? What methods do they use? What is their coaching philosophy? How dedicated will they be to you? Where are they based?

The best thing for me is always guidance. Not a coach who says, ‘Do this, do that’, but someone who can give me a framework and then give me the tools to be able to mentally and physically make the right choices and the right decisions while I’m playing or while I’m training.

  • It’s important that you make sure your coach has no link with any match-fixing or doping cases.
  • Speak to other athletes about who they recommend and why, but ultimately choosing a coach is your decision.
  • Have a trial period with your coach, so you can see first-hand how they work and whether they’re a good fit.
  • Like every athlete, every coach is different. The style of their coaching needs to work for you.
  • Trust your judgment. The coach has to be right for you, not anyone else.
