The torches, medals and sports equipment which have marked the Summer Games
The 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympic Games were marked by the exploits of a truly remarkable athlete, Eric Heiden of the USA.
Olympic speed-skating comprises five events: 500- 1000- 1500- 5000- and 10,000 metres. Heiden entered all five races. He won a gold medal and set an Olympic record in every race, an achievement which is unique in Olympic speed-skating.
