CYCLING: CHRIS BOARDMAN'S REVOLUTIONARY BIKE

Chris Boardman, track cycling,
individual pursuit, Barcelona
1992.

When the British cyclist Chris Boardman appeared on the starting line of his first qualifying race for the individual pursuit in Barcelona in 1992, this totally revolutionary bike caused a sensation.

But the excitement was nothing compared to his results: Boardman shattered every record, and cycle racing has never been the same since.

Boardman's superbike overturned bicycle design. Frames and forks, which had hardly changed in a hundred years, were radically redesigned. The basics of other components were also revised, triathlete handlebars, a lenticular wheel at the back and extremely light materials were used to substantially boost performance.
