The IOC is very active in the field of advocacy for gender issues. As an international organisation with worldwide recognition, it uses national, regional and international platforms and events to advocate increasing possibilities for girls and women in sport.
The creation of the Women and Sport Working Group in 1995 also marked a turning point in this field. Its members are particularly active in raising awareness about gender equality in their respective domains of sports expertise throughout the year. Among other important advocacy initiatives are the yearly IOC Women and Sport Trophy and the IOC World Conferences on Women and Sport.
The IOC Women and Sport Trophy was first introduced in 2000.
Every year, six trophies (one per continent, and one at world level) are awarded to a woman or man (former athlete, coach, administrator or journalist) or to an organisation that has worked to develop, encourage and strengthen the participation of women and girls in physical and sports activities, in coaching or in administrative and decision-making structures, as well as for the promotion of female journalists and women's sport in the media. Each NOC, Olympic International Federation or Continental Association may propose one candidate, whose file is studied by an IOC selection committee composed of members of the Women and Sport Commission.
Since 1996, the IOC advocacy action has been supported by the organisation of quadrennial World Conferences on Women and Sport. The purpose of these Conferences is to assess the progress made in this area within the Olympic Movement and to define priority actions to improve and increase the involvement of women in this framework. The most recent conference was held in Marrakech, in March 2004, and led to the adoption of a series of recommendations that served as a basis to design the present IOC policy for gender equality. What has been achieved since will be assessed at the upcoming IV IOC World Conference on Women and Sport to be held under the motto "Sport as a vehicle for social change" in Jordan, 8-10 March 2008.
