Following the recommendations of a Study Commission of the IOC Centennial Olympic Congress in 1994, a Women and Sport Working Group was established in 1995 by the IOC President to advise the Executive Board on suitable policies to be implemented in this field. It became a fully fledged commission in March 2004.
This Commission, like all IOC commissions and working groups, is a consultative body composed of members from the three components of the Olympic Movement (the IOC, IFs and NOCs), representatives of the athletes and the International Paralympic Committee, and independent members. It meets once a year. On the basis of its recommendations, an action programme is developed and implemented by the IOC through its International Cooperation and Development Department.
This Commission is currently composed of 25 members and is chaired by Ms Anita L. DeFrantz (USA), IOC member since 1986.
