From 8 to 24 February 2002, more than 2550 athletes, representing 77 countries, are coming together in Salt Lake City to celebrate the biggest sporting event. Fifteen disciplines are represented: Alpine Skiing, Ski jumping, Cross Country Skiing, Freestyle Skiing, Snowboarding, Nordic Combined, Biathlon, Figure skating, Speed skatingurling, Short Track Speed Skating, Luge, Skeleton, Bobsleigh, Hockey and Curling (in flash 5 format).
Each sport and discipline includes different events which will allow the best athletes in the world to demonstrate them. After Nagano, the long-track events were retained. Furthermore, after more than a 50-year absence, skeleton is back on the programme.

At the Salt Lake City Games, on 22 February 2002, the Croatian skier Janica Kostelic won a third gold medal, this time in the women's giant slalom. This last medal was added to the two gold medals she won in the combined alpine and slalom events, as well as the silver won in the super-G.
