The Canoe and Kayak races at the YOG were all about athletes racing head-to-head, with pursuit and obstacle elements added to make the races really fun and exciting to watch. Unlike in the senior Olympic Games, the Singapore 2010 Organising Committee did provide equipment to all athletes, so that they didin't have to ship their own all the way to Singapore!
A maximum of three athletes per country (with a maximum of one male athlete in K1 and C1, and one female athlete in K1) were selected. Each of them did participate in two events: Slalom and Sprint. Each race featured two athletes competing against each other head-to-head.The fastest from each pair advanced to the next round. In the Canoe Sprint event, the athletes paddled around a circuit. For Canoe Slalom, the athletes competed on a calm water surface, rather than a natural river or artificial slalom course. However, they still needed to demonstrate the skills of a Slalom athlete by manoeuvring around gates whilst racing against their competitor!
