The Museum was offering activities, an aperitif, a live broadcast of the Opening Ceremony on a giant screen, Chinese food at the restaurant, and, to top it off, an exceptional concert - a mix of rock and traditional Chinese music.

Excellent figures

For the Friday alone, the Museum clocked up record figures: 2,300 visitors, of which 1,120 were paying. The restaurant was packed, and almost 400 meals were served. Some customers had to be turned away, but they were nonetheless able to take advantage of the kiosk and its snacks. The shop also had an excellent turnover.

Warm and friendly atmosphere

For the live broadcast of the Opening Ceremony, under the big tent on the terrace, the spectators had to squeeze together. There were some 900 people, and many of them had to stand. But this didn’t stop anyone from applauding on many occasions at the sight of the exceptional images produced for the world by the Chinese.

Concert: Pipa & Rock - a fusion project

In the evening, the auditorium was also full for the wonderful concert by Chinese artist Yang Jing, a pipa player, who was accompanied by Swiss musicians.

Nelson Montfort promotes The Museum!

Media coverage has also been very encouraging. But the icing on the cake was provided by Nelson Montfort. On public TV channel France 2 (48.2 per cent of the audience during the Opening Ceremony), he mentioned the Olympic Museum as a must for those unable to go to Beijing.

This week at the Museum... 11-17.08.2008

Beijing 2008 exhibition

No fewer than seven operations in Beijing and an eighth in Hong Kong where the equestrian events are being held. The Olympic Museum is everywhere in the Chinese capital!

Olympex

At the Beijing Exhibition Centre, it is present at Olympex - The Olympic Expo Beijing 2008 on the theme Olympic Art & Symbols. Some 3,000m2 of medals, torches, and delegation and ceremony outfits, not forgetting the winning works of the 2008 IOC Art & Sport Contest.

Olympic treasures

Part of the IOC Olympic Treasure Exhibition, after a year spent travelling through the big cities of the country, is back in Beijing until 30 October at the China Millennium Monument in the large One World, One Dream exhibition (nearly 8,000m2) organised by BOCOG.

Collecting stories

Operations are also taking place at the IOC Corner in the Olympic Village on one 300m2 stand, perfectly located in front of the main restaurant and which the Museum has decorated. The Museum is there to collect stories from the Games As at each edition of the Games, the Museum has also decorated the Olympic Club, where Marketing receives its sponsors.

Lausanne, Olympic Capital

During August, it is also present in spaces in the Swissôtel in Beijing with the operation Lausanne, the Olympic Capital and Lake Geneva Region greet Beijing 2008.

Hong Kong Jockey Club

Finally, 2,000km south, in Hong Kong, where the equestrian events are being staged, The Olympic Museum and the Hong Kong Jockey Club have set up the 2008 Olympic Equestrian Exhibition, a retrospective on the theme of equestrian sports, on show until the end of September.

Over 2,000 items

Estimate of the number of items from the collections sent to China: over 2,000!

Learn more about The Museum

At the Museum, the celebration was also a success…

Many people, IOC staff and scores of visitors, followed the Opening Ceremony live on the big screen in the auditorium and took part in the festivities organised to mark the start of these Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing.

Same wonderment and same emotion

An ideal time difference: 8 o’clock in the evening in Beijing and 2 o’clock in the afternoon in Lausanne! The same wonderment and the same emotion at these spectacular images. We knew that the Chinese were masters of showmanship and light shows, but they exceeded all our expectations…

Taijiquan in front of the Museum and Chinese food at the restaurant

It began in a very “zen” way in front of the Musem with an introduction to taijiquan, the best way of facing a day that was going to be very long for some people… At the end of the afternoon, an aperitif was hosted by The Olympic Museum, with the possibility to have something to eat (Chinese food, of course) at the restaurant. Then, for those who didn’t have the opportunity to be there at the beginning of the afternoon, there was a broadcast of the highlights of the Opening Ceremony. Images that many enjoyed seeing again.

Amazing concert in the auditorium

Ending the day was the exceptional concert by Jing Yang, one of the great virtuosos of the pipa (a traditional string instrument) accompanied by Swiss musicians. Amazing!

Physical and cultural activities until 24 August

Until 24 August, there will be broadcasts of the events and various activities, all linked to the Middle Kingdom.

From 8 to 24 August, the celebration continues at The Olympic Museum…

Experiencing the Beijing Olympic Games in Lausanne is all about following the Games while taking part in physical and cultural activities cleverly linking tradition and modernity.
