YOG champion Jangmi Kim calls the shots as she takes gold at London 2012

The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) athletes are certainly making their mark on the London 2012 Olympic Games, and yesterday saw another triumph for one of our sporting stars. Making history was South Korea’s Jangmi Kim as she took gold in the women’s 25m pistol, winning the second gold medal in the sport for her country. “I’m not sure if it’s a dream or if this is a reality,” she said after claiming the top spot.

The 19 year-old, who was favourite to win after setting an Olympic record of 591 out of 600 in the qualifying round, was in danger of losing her lead to reigning champion Ying Chen in a nail-biting final. “I got more nervous than I thought I would. I was trying not to pressurise myself too much; I was trying to enjoy it.”

Ying went on to win the silver as Jangmi scored an incredible total of 792.4 points. The determined teen later revealed that she had eyes only for the gold: “I left home saying I was going to win gold. I am happy to go back with the brightest medal around my neck.”

Jangmi, who won the 10m air pistol title at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games, admitted she found the experience of being at her first Olympic Games a challenge. “There were not so many media at the Youth Olympic Games,” she explained. “The pressure is definitely higher here, but I put in the same effort to perform well.”

Back in the pool, YOG favourite Chad le Clos (RSA) is still making waves as he finished joint 7th in the men’s 200m individual medley semi-finals to qualify for tonight’s final where he will race his hero Michael Phelps once again. Unfortunately, despite an impressive race, Canada’s Tera Van Beilen just missed out on making the women’s 100m breaststroke finals.

An inspirational day for some of our Youth Olympic Games stars, and here’s hoping the medals keep coming!
