On Saturday 15 February, the Russian International Olympic University (RIOU) opened its doors to allow representatives of International Sports Federations, National Olympic Committees, Olympic participants and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to get a first-hand glimpse at its state-of-the-art campus situated in Sochi.
On this occasion, visitors toured the venue and gathered on the 14th floor for presentations on the University’s education programme, including its recently launched master of sport administration (MSA). Offering unique training, practical experience and expertise on hosting the Olympic Games and staging major sports events, the RIOU will train an entire new generation of qualified sports managers in Russia.
As President Bach stated during his visit to the campus in October last year: “There will be many lasting legacies from Sochi 2014, including the RIOU, which is committed to producing graduates of the highest calibre to work in the world of sport. The Olympic Movement as a whole will benefit from the establishment of the university, as, of course, will Russian sport.”
Another key initiative has been the integration of Sochi 2014 educational content into the secondary school curriculum, whereby a series of academic kits have been developed for school children across Russia. By September 2013, some 4 million school children in 60 Russian regions had attended 100,000 Olympic lessons.
Since 2010, the Sochi Organising Committee has also been holding a nationwide “Sochi 2014 Teacher” contest, which has seen tens of thousands of educators from 78 Russian regions, as well as from other countries, take part. In 2013, the contest was dedicated to the “One school – One country” education project, which sets out to educate schoolchildren about the traditions, culture and histories of countries participating in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games have become a catalyst for infusing the Olympic values and experience across Russia, from a young age to degree-level.
