With Sochi 2014 drawing to a close, the Organising Committee’s President, Dmitry Chernyshenko, has hailed the 2014 Olympic Winter Games as “exceptional”. A record 88 National Olympic Committees have competed in Sochi, with fans from more than 126 countries visiting the resort to enjoy Russia’s first ever Winter Games.

“The Games, naturally, were exceptional,” said Chernyshenko. “We had a record number of NOCs, fans from more than 126 countries have come to our Games to experience some incredible sport, and more than two million spectators enjoyed our incredible cultural programme that we selected from 70 regions of Russia, with more than 5,000 beautiful artists.”

According to Chernyshenko, the Sochi 2014 website received more than 130 million unique visitors, with the total volume of Olympic internet traffic exceeding one petabyte (over one million gigabytes).

“Our digital achievements are also record breaking,” he added. “Our mobile application, for example, was downloaded by more than six million users and launched 125 million times. I probably launched it one million times myself, updating the medal rankings!”

For Chernyshenko, however, the success of the Sochi 2014 Winter Games cannot be measured in statistics.

“For me personally, at the beginning some people asked me, ‘What do you expect the most’, and that was that the atmosphere we achieved would be the major outcome of the Games. This great atmosphere - in the Park it was electric. I am also very pleased that Russian fans were not only supporting Russian teams, but all teams.”

The conclusion of the Games at the Closing Ceremony will signal the end of a long journey for Chernyshenko, who was leader of the bid team that won the right to host the Games in 2007. As a Sochi native, he is pleased to see how his hometown has been transformed for the Games and the success it has enjoyed.

“We have seen how dramatically it has changed my home city,” he said. “This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity not only for me and this particular city or entire region, but a unique chance for the country to show itself to the world. I hardly could have expected at the beginning of the journey that it would be as successful as it is now.”

The Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games will conclude with the Closing Ceremony on 23 Feburary.
