Over the past week, the Olympic flame has been carried on skis, a BMX bike and a traditional troika sled as it continues its journey across Russia ahead of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

The troika ride took place in Penza, on the banks of the Sura river, with Victoria Panurina, head of the Zavivalovsky stud farm, carrying the flame on a sleigh pulled by three white Orlov trotters.

Other Torchbearers in Penza included Moscow 1980 diving champion Irina Kalinina, London 2012 swimming silver medallist Anastasia Zuyeva, and Sydney 2000 diving gold medallist Igor Lukashin.

The previous day, in the Republic of Mordovia, Russian BMX star Evgeny Komarov impressed Olympic fans in the city of Saransk with his skills on a bike while carrying the Olympic flame.

He was followed by Russian biathlete Natalia Shalaeva, who carried the flame through the city’s biathlon stadium, while other Torchbearers included Russian actor Stanislav Duzhnikov, Olympic race-walk champion Valery Borchin, Athens 2004 wrestling gold medallist Aleksey Mishin and three-time world champion and Beijing 2008 race-walk gold medallist Olga Kaniskina.

On 14 January, the Torch Relay will celebrate its 100th day since beginning in Moscow on 7 October. The relay will culminate at the Opening Ceremony of Sochi 2014 on 7 February 2014 after an epic 123-day journey across Russia.

The record-breaking 65,000km route has been designed to ensure that approximately 90% of Russia's population will be within an hour of the Relay at some stage, allowing around 130 million residents to participate in the event.
