As the Olympic Flame made its way from Middlesbrough to Hull on Day 31 of the London Torch Relay, one Torchbearer used his moment to shine to propose to his girlfriend. David State, 25, from Redcar, was carrying the Flame along Loftus High Street when he picked girlfriend Christine out from the crowd and got down on one knee to ask her to marry him – with hundreds of people cheering as she said, “Yes!”
Having completed his run, David, who was nominated as a Torchbearer for his dedication to helping improve young people's quality of life and his work with the British Red Cross, said: “It was very, very special. I can't describe how I feel right now. It went perfectly.”
Recovering from the surprise, Christine, who is eight months pregnant, said: “I'm still in shock. I saw him running up the hill and was trying not to cry. He stopped and gave me a cuddle then he got down on one knee. I'm so proud of him. I'm a lucky girl.”
The following day saw the Relay travel from Hull to York, with Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice welcoming the Olympic Flame as it visited Harewood House before an Evening Celebration was held at York Racecourse, where Torchbearer Harvey Smith carried the Flame on show jumping horse.
On Day 33, the Torch Relay continued on to Carlisle, visiting landmarks such as York Minster and the National Railway Museum, before boarding the famous Scots Guardsman train to Thirsk.
