With three more days to go until the Opening Ceremony of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the IOC Executive Board (EB) met with the IOC Athletes’ Commission this morning to discuss important topics includingthe protection of clean athletes, athletes’ representation in National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and International Federations (IFs), rights and obligations of athletes, the Olympic Charter and the IOC Athletes’ Commission’s mission during the Games, to name just a few.

IOC President Thomas Bach, an Olympic champion himself and founding member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission in 1981, kicked off the meeting by stating: “What a feeling – I still remember when I was sitting on the other side of the table making points on behalf of the athletes.”

The President took the opportunity to congratulate Claudia Bokel and Angela Ruggiero, who were re-elected as Chair and elected as Vice-Chair respectively by their Commission colleagues yesterday. Bach also welcomed attending IOC Honorary President Jacques Rogge.

Claudia Bokel, the Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, said: “These regular meetings with the IOC Executive Board are very important for us as we can make sure that our voices are heard at the highest level and allow us to be effective advocates for our peers.us

Commission to be at service of athletes at Games time
During the Games, members of the IOC Athletes’ Commission will be present in the IOC spaces in the Olympic Villages and serve as contact points for all athletes participating in the Sochi Games should they have any questions, comments or concerns. They will also assist athletes in their career planning and spread the word about the IOC’s Athletes Career Programme (ACP). Another important task of the Commission is to help oversee the elections for the IOC Athletes’ Commission taking place during the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. All athletes participating in the Games are encouraged to vote for two of their peers as representatives on the Commission.  They will replace Rebecca Scott and Saku Koivu, whose terms of office are coming to an end after eight years.
