Young athletes at the 2nd Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Lillehammer are picking up some useful tips about injury prevention thanks to the IOC’s innovative Get Set smartphone app.
The IOC medical and scientific team has been demonstrating the app to athletes as part of the Learn & Share programme that is running alongside the YOG, providing practical tips on how to avoid injuries in sport.
The app, which was launched in 2014, features video demonstrations of the most effective evidence-based workout routines for every Olympic sport, with specific exercises tailored to each part of the body. And so far it has been very well received by the athletes in Lillehammer.
“The young athletes here are obviously all very familiar with apps, so we’ve had a great response,” says Torbjørn Soligard, a member of the IOC’s medical and scientific team who is demonstrating the app during the YOG. “It’s very simple to use and we’ve also recently been adding lots of new exercises. The best part is that the athletes can come here, try some of the exercises and then take that knowledge away with them in their pockets by downloading the app to their phones.”
The videos within the app feature easy-to-follow instructions on how to perform each exercise correctly, with three varying levels of difficulty allowing users to challenge themselves as they progress, and Soligard believes the young athletes in Lillehammer – all aged between 15 and 18 – will benefit from what the app can show them.
“When you’re younger, it is much easier to ingrain good body movements and positions,” he explains. “As you get older it becomes a lot more difficult to unlearn the bad movements that you may have been doing, which could have been contributing to your injuries.”
