The final athletics event of the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games promises to be as spectacular as it is groundbreaking, as over 500 athletes compete in the ground-breaking 8x100m mixed team relay.

The event features teams comprised of eight randomly selected male and female athletes from all National Olympic Committees and from every track and field discipline.

The event, on 26 August, will take place on a track open to the public near the Youth Olympic Village, and will take the athletics out of the stadium and on to the streets.

Over 500 athletes - from long distance runners to triple jumpers -will join forces in the first mixed gender, mixed discipline relay in Olympic history.

“It’s going to be really weird, a lot different to a normal relay, but it will be fun,” said Jeffrey Uzzell (USA), who won the men’s 100m final C.

Meanwhile, Irish discus thrower Eoin Sheridan admits he could be one of the event’s slower participants.

“I haven’t done any special training. But I think it’s a good idea,” he said. It’s good to get everyone together.”

Rosie Mulipola (SAM), who finished second in the women’s 100m final D, says she is looking forward to racing on a team with Youth Olympians from around the world.

“It's an awesome idea. To get together with other athletes, to share their countries and get to know their cultures – it's cool,” Mulipola said.

“I don't know what the name of my team is, but there's another athlete from Australia and a Togolese. I'm so excited by it,” she added.
