On International Women’s Day on 8 March, a tribute was paid to Lydia Nsekera through the publishing of her career in international sport and particularly football on the web site of the Burundi arm of Worldwide Olympic Partner Coca-Cola.
From 12 to 14 March, the Coordination Commission for the Games in 2014 paid its ninth and penultimate visit to Sochi. The Commission, chaired by IOC member Jean-Claude Killy, was this time joined by representatives of each of the Olympic Winter Sports IFs. During this visit, the Commission members were updated on the progress made on the Olympic project by the Organising Committee (Sochi 2014) and its local partners, with less than one year to go until the Games. Coca-Cola has been honoured with a Sochi 2014 Sustainability Award in recognition of the environmental initiatives it supported for International Black Sea Day. The “Clean Sea for Clean City” project encourages schoolchildren, students and Sochi 2014 volunteers to participate in a clean-up of the strip of beach alongside the River Sochi. This event is organised by Coca-Cola, Sochi 2014 and the City of Sochi Administration. The “Harmony with Nature” award was presented to Coca-Cola at a ceremony in Sochi attended by the Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Kozak, and members of the IOC Coordination Commission for Sochi 2014. The Dow company has been named as the Official Carbon Partner of the 2014 Winter Games. Dow will help Sochi 2014 to mitigate the direct carbon footprint associated with holding the Games through the implementation of energy-efficient technologies, with improved greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions performance in the key areas of infrastructure, industry and agriculture. INTERNATIONAL SPORTS FEDERATIONS
The World Cadet and Junior Fencing Championships 2013 will take place in Porec (Croatia) from 6 to 15 April. Between 900 and 1,000 young fencers aged 14 to 20 are expected to compete. Right before the Championships, from 29 March to 5 April, the International Fencing Federation (FIE) will organise an international training camp. More than 50 national federations from the five continents have been invited to send a representative who will also have the opportunity to take part in the competitions. Info at www.fie.ch.
A Refereeing and Coaching Seminar was recently held in the People’s Republic of China, bringing together 650 coaches, athletes and referees on and around the tatami. The International Judo Federation (IJF) sent several experts. In addition to the seminar, the Chinese Judo Association organised a two-day test competition and a two-day training camp.
A major children’s judo exhibition brought together thousands of children and parents at the Sierra Leone National Stadium in Freetown. This demonstration preceded a training camp also organised by the Sierra Leone Judo Federation. Info at www.ijf.org.
The competition calendar of the 2013 edition of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Cup has been unveiled. It comprises eight meets across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The main innovation for this year is the organisation of two meets immediately after the World Championships in Barcelona (Spain), which end on 4 August. At its meeting on 5 March, the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme Working Group supported the implementation of an Athlete Biological Passport Programme from 2013. An increase in the number of blood tests carried out each year will also be made. This working group is made up of representatives of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and the Grand Slam tournaments. NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEES
The Board of Directors of the Bahrain NOC – whose President is Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa – recently met at the NOC headquarters. The subjects addressed included the new strategy for 2013-17 and the NOC’s new emblem to be launched in May, as well as the NOC’s participation in 2013 in the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games in Indonesia, the 4th Asian Indoor Games in the Republic of Korea and the 2nd Asian Youth Games in Nanjing (People’s Republic of China).
Giovanni Malago, the new President of the Italian NOC (CONI), who succeeded Gianni Petrucci, is 54 and not 64 as mentioned in last week’s edition of the Olympic Highlights. Info at www.coni.it.
At the Moskva Hotel in Belgrade, where it was founded on 23 February 1910, the Serbian NOC celebrated its 103rd anniversary. NOC President Vlade Divac officially signed the invitation for Serbian athletes to participate in the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Among the many people present were past and present Olympians; Serbian Sports Association President Aleksandr Sostar; and representatives of the government, diplomatic missions, sponsors, partners and the media. ORGANISING COMMITTEES FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES
The Organising Committee for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games has moved to new premises in Rio de Janeiro’s Cidade Nova neighbourhood. The modern building has been designed to be as sustainable and accessible as possible, and will house both Rio 2016 and the Municipal Olympic Company until after the Games have been held.
