Last week in Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, IOC member and President of the Organising Committee for the 2016 Games, hosted his IOC colleague, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, accompanied by his wife, Princess Mary Elizabeth. On 25 September, the IOC President announced the composition of the working group responsible for evaluating the six Candidate Cities for the third edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2018. The cities are (in alphabetical order): Buenos Aires (Argentina), Glasgow (Great Britain), Guadalajara (Mexico), Medellin (Colombia), Poznan (Poland) and Rotterdam (Netherlands). This group will be chaired by Claudia Bokel, Olympic silver medallist and world fencing champion, who is also an IOC member and Chairwoman of its Athletes’ Commission. On 26 September, at Vidy, a meeting of the liaison group on sports betting was held, attended by IOC member Denis Oswald, among others.
From 26 to 28 September, the third meeting of the Coordination Commission for the 2nd Summer YOG in 2014 was held in Nanjing. The Commission members, led by IOC member Lambis V. Nikolaou, acknowledged the great progress made by the Organising Committee in every area, with just two years to go before the opening of this second edition of the Summer YOG. INTERNATIONAL SPORTS FEDERATIONS
In the framework of the centennial of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), a historic exhibition will be held at the Juan Antonio Samaranch Olympic and Sports Museum in Barcelona (Spain) from 13 October to 25 November 2012. This exhibition will include objects linked to the Olympic Games, from Ancient Greece to the London Games held this summer. Info at www.iaaf.org.
The International Swimming Federation (FINA)’s 17th World Sports Medicine Congress will be held in Istanbul (Turkey) on 10 and 11 December 2012, as a prelude to the 11th Swimming World Championships (25m). Meeting in Anaheim, the 33rd Congress of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) elected Ary Graça as IF President. Graça has been President of the Brazilian and South American Confederation federations, and is a member of the FIVB Board of Directors. He is the fourth FIVB President to date. NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEES
The Colombian NOC has informed us that some 17,000 athletes took part in the sixth edition of its women’s race on 23 September. They included international level athletes from abroad. More info at www.coc.org.co.
On 24 September, the Indonesian Olympic Committee organised a talent identification seminar. Held in the Australian embassy in Jakarta, this seminar brought together some 100 coaches and managers. The seminar was presented by Jason Gulbin, Head of the talent identification section at the Australian Institute of Sport, and was closed by Anthony Sunarjo, Head of the Olympic Solidarity Commission for the Indonesian Olympic Committee. On 19 September, the Italian medallists from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games (photo above) were received by the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, at the Quirinal Palace. On this occasion, the Olympic and Paralympic flag-bearers, Valentina Vezzali and Oscar De Pellegrin respectively, handed over the national flag, signed by all the champions, to the President, in the presence of Giovanni Petrucci, President of the Italian NOC; Raffaele Pagnozzi, NOC Secretary General; IOC members Mario Pescante, Franco Carraro and Ottavio Cinquanta; and IOC honorary member Manuela Di Centa. The NOC of New Zealand has informed us that the Olympic gold medal was presented by the country’s Governor General, Jerry Mateparae, to the London Games shot put champion, Valerie Adams, at a ceremony held in Auckland on 19 September. Broadcast live, this ceremony was followed by almost 4.5 million New Zealanders. Among the numerous personalities present in Auckland were IOC member Barry Maister, as well as several London 2012 medallists. This ceremony was held one month after the announcement of the positive doping test result of Belarusian athlete Nadzeya Ostapchuk, who had placed ahead of Valerie Adams in London. ORGANISING COMMITTEES FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES
On 21 September, in the framework of the XI International Investment Forum, “Sochi 2012”, the Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2014 (Sochi 2014) signed agreements with Olympic global partner Coca-Cola and local partner Ingosstrakh, which sees them become Presenting Partners of the Olympic Torch Relay for these Games. On 25 September, the whole of Russia celebrated 500 days to go before the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014. Various sporting and musical events were held in 17 cities, with the main attraction being an all-Russia national flashmob consisting of more than 12,000 Sochi 2014 volunteers drawn from the 26 volunteer centres. They participated in the construction of giant Olympic pictograms in squares, stadiums and indoor sports complexes of the various cities, managing to represent images of all 22 Olympic sports. Last week, a meeting was held in Brasilia between the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, representatives of the Organising Committee for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio (Rio 2016) and three levels of government (federal, state and city). Those present included the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Cabral; Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes; Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo; the President of Rio 2016, Carlos Arthur Nuzman; the President of the Olympic Public Authority (APO), Marcio Fortes; and Rio 2016 CEO Leonardo Gryner.
