For Austrian sailor Lara Vadlau, London 2012 seemed like a distant dream. “I thought that the qualification would be all but impossible,” she remembers. But through hard work and a lot of training, Lara’s dream came true and this summer she will be heading to the city to compete in the 470 class at her first Olympic Games.
“Somehow I haven’t fully realised yet that I will go to the Olympics. I want to gather as much experience as possible and soak up all information like a sponge,” she said.
Lara will draw on her time at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, where she won gold in the one- person dingy, to prepare her for London.
“I believe that the YOG will prove very helpful for me at the Olympic Games this summer, since they were so well organised and you got a really good idea of how it is to be a professional athlete.“
And to all those young athletes out there hoping to compete in the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, Lara says: “You can really achieve everything if you just have the right attitude and dedication from the start.”
