The Olympic Flame made its way from Chelmsford to Cambridge on Day 50 of the Torch Relay on Saturday 7 July.
Among the 117 inspirational torchbearers that led the Flame along the route – which included a stint on a raft at Lee Valley White Water Centre – were celebrity chef Jamie Oliver and Olympian Iwan Thomas, the current UK 400m record holder.
On Sunday, Day 51 of the Relay, a further 131 Torchbearers took their turn, carrying the Flame 107.66 miles from Cambridge to Luton. David Cole from Luton, the final torchbearer of the day, lit the cauldron on stage at Popes Meadow Park, Luton, signifying the start of the Evening Celebration.
Members of the public have been treated to a wide range of music and dance acts throughout the London 2012 Torch Relay, thanks to the Evening Celebrations that have been taking part at the end of each day.
The events have been organised by the London 2012 Organising Committee and the Presenting Partners of the Olympic Torch Relay, including TOP partners Coca-Cola and Samsung, with support from the local authorities in each host community.
Performers so far have included the likes of chart-topping boy band The Wanted, British rock band You Me At Six and platinum-selling singer-songwriter Eliza Doolittle.
Each evening ends with a celebration cauldron being lit with the Olympic Flame, while the events are set to culminate with an incredible 80,000 capacity celebration concert in London’s Hyde Park on 26 July – the day before the London 2012 Opening Ceremony.
James Williams, Director, Olympic Torch Relay, Coca Cola Northwest Europe & Nordics, said in May: “As a Presenting Partner of the Olympic Torch Relay we have a fantastic opportunity to bring music and celebration to every corner of the UK as the Olympic Flame progresses its journey. We are taking some of the nation’s best-loved musical talent on the road for an incredible 66-night tour to give young people across the country the chance to Move to the Beat and participate in the magic of London 2012. We’re encouraging everyone to join in celebrating the Future Flames who have carried the Olympic Flame through their communities by registering for tickets to their local events and the finale celebration concert in London’s Hyde Park.”
Sunny Hwang, Vice President & Head of Global Sports Marketing, Samsung Electronics, said in May: “It has always been Samsung’s ambition for the Olympic Games to include everyone and our evening entertainment at 66 towns and cities along the route allows local residents and supporters of the Olympic Games to get involved and join the festivities.”
