Meghan Agosta celebrated her 27th birthday by scoring a pair of goals to lead Canada to a 3-2 victory over the USA in the preliminary round of the Sochi 2014 women's hockey tournament at the Shayba Arena.
Her performance stirred memories of Turin 2006, when she marked her 19th birthday with goals against Russia.
With both teams already on two wins from their first two games, and safely into the semi-finals, the main prize was the chance to top Group A
After the Americans opened the scoring through Hilary Knight, beating Canadian goaltender Charline Labonte for the first time in the tournament, Canada scored twice early in the third period through Hayley Wickenheiser and Agosta to break open a tight contest.
Agosta scored her second on a breakaway to make it 3-1, before Schlepper grabbed a consolation goal for the USA in the dying seconds.
Earlier in the day, a tight encounter saw Switzerland go down 4-3 to Finland, who booked their place in the quarter-finals.
The Finns had their captain Jenni Hiirikoski to thank, as the defenseman scored twice, including a dramatic overtime winner.
The Swiss remain rooted to the bottom of Group A, after losing all three of their opening matches.
