National junior record-holder in 110 m hurdles, pole vault and decathlon (1968); 4th in the 110 m hurdles at the European Championships in Athens (1969); silver medallist in 110 m hurdles at the Games of the XX Olympiad in Munich in 1972; European champion in the 110 m hurdles (1974); gold medallist in 110 m hurdles at the Games of the XXI Olympiad in Montreal in 1976, 3rd place in the 50 m hurdles at the European Indoor Championships in Grenoble (1981)
