Joy and tears went hand-in-hand at the Short Track Speed Skating competition at the Innsbruck 2012 Youth Olympic Winter Games, between 18-21 January at the Olympic Ice Stadium.
Korea dominated the Men’s competition as well, with Su Min Yoon and Hyo Jun Lim trading podium places from the 1000m to the 500m. Silver medallist in the 1000m, Yoon also won Gold in the 500m, where Lim claimed silver after a gold-medal performance in the 1000m.
Both beamed with satisfaction after the races, putting their success and perfect coordination on the track down to their hard practice routines.
Bronze medallist Hongzhi Xu (CHN) was upset at being overtaken by the Koreans after leading the pack, and admitted he could have had a better race.

Tears ran down Suk Hee Shim’s (KOR) face as she won gold in the 1000m but only after seeing her teammate and friend Jung Hyun Park (KOR) eliminated after crashing in the final.
Both Koreans were out in front and expected to share the podium, but when Japan's Sumire Kikuchi tried to pass from the inside, Park fell. Kikuchi settled for bronze, while Aili Xu (CHN) took silver. Kikuchi said she could not fully enjoy her place on the podium, adding she felt bitter knowing she had won a medal only because Park had been eliminated.

Shim looked calmer after clinching her second gold in two days in the 500m. In a thrilling final, Chinese Chunyu Qu was asked to leave the ice after she was deemed to have impeded the Korean during an overtaking manoeuvre in which Shim fell. The judges restarted the race with only three remaining finalists. Xu won her second Silver medal, but did not feel satisfied, having hoped for a gold for China.
