The Historical Archives Section is responsible for collecting, conserving, describing and communicating about the written documents produced or received by the International Olympic Committee in the exercise of its activities, as well as private collections.
In this capacity, it provides a valuable service in promoting knowledge of the global Olympic and sporting phenomenon.
Presentation of the fonds
The Historical Archives fonds retraces the history of the IOC and the Olympic Movement from their creation in 1894 to the present time (except for the last 20 years of activity). It is composed of text documents (paper folders) and three microfilm collections equalling a total of one linear kilometre of documents, i.e. approximately 20,000 folders.
The classification of the IOC’s Archives fonds reflects the organisation and activities of the institution through time. It is organised as follows:
Anyone interested may consult the archives in the study room, under the supervision of an archivist. Access to the archives is regulated according to the following terms.
Anyone wishing to undertake research within the archives must first fill in this electronic form: OSC research visit request form.
Upon request, preliminary research will be undertaken by an archivist to allow the researcher to evaluate the pertinence of visiting the OSC themselves.
