New for YOG!
There were only two teams (one women's team and one men's team) per National Olympic Committee (NOC) competing in one of the four team sports featured at the YOG (Football, Handball, Hockey and Volleyball).
The men’s and woman’s competitions followed the same rules. Each competition featured six teams – one from each FIFA Confederation. The teams were divided into two groups of three teams, in which each team played every other team in the group once. The teams ranked first and second in each group went forward to the semi-finals, while the teams ranked third in each group played off for 5th and 6th places. The semi-final winners played in the gold medal match and the loser played in the bronze medal match.
