New for the YOG!

The mixed team event featured men and women from different countries competing on the same team. For the safety of the young athletes, Kansetsu Waza (arm lock techniques) was not allowed in the YOG Judo competition.

Competition format

There were eight weight categories each for men and women, and the format was the same for each category. In the individual competition, Judokas were divided into two pools (A and B), then into two sub-pools.

The winners of pool A and pool B fought off for the gold and silver medals. All Judokas defeated by the pool winners took part in a repechage, with the winners of each repechage then fought the loser of the final of the other pool for the bronze medals.

The team competition ran in a direct knockout format without repechage. The gold and silver medals were decided in a final match, while both teams beaten in the semi finals won bronze medals.
