New for the YOG!
The YOG cycling competition had a completely new format. Female athletes in mixed-gender teams took on the challenge of riding three different kinds of bike – BMX, mountain bike and road.
Ninety-six men and 32 women from 32 NOCs participated at the YOG, and there was no individual events – just a team event. There were 32 teams, one from each country, each consisting of three men and one woman. Each of the three men competed in one of the three events: Cross Country, Time Trial or BMX (one rider from each team in each discipline). Each woman competed in all three events. Finally, all three men and a woman in each team competed in the Road Race. The medals were decided on the overall points won by all four riders on each team.
