Despite the difficulties with the weather, FIS was pleased with both the event and the venue, which will host all the Alpine Skiing events during next year’s Olympic Winter Games.

“I think this year the organisation was perfect,” said Marcus Waldner, the FIS European Cup Coordinator. “We are very satisfied. Conditions were very tough… so it was a real test. That was very challenging, but finally it turned out very well. I think we are on the right direction.”

On the slopes, Italy’s Silvano Varettoni won the men's super-G, ahead of Russia’s Aleksandr Glebov and Germany’s Josef Ferstl, while Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel won the ladies’ super-G race, with Italy’s Camille Borsotti and Austria’s Tamara Tippler taking 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.

The men's giant-slalom was dominated by Switzerland, with Thomas Tumler claiming victory ahead of compatriots Gino Caviezel and Manuel Pleisch. Coralie Frasse Sombet, of France, won the ladies’ giant slalom ahead of Switzerland’s Jasmina Suter and Italy’s Karoline Pichler .

Following the races, many of the athletes were also quick to praise the event organisers, as well as the Rosa Khutor tracks, which were designed by legendary Olympic downhill champion Bernhard Russi.

“The organisation is very effective, all just perfect, and I'm happy with everything,” said Italy’s Borsotti after her super-G podium finish. "This is the third year in a row I have come to Sochi: two years ago I took part in the European Cup, and last year in the World Cup. Now I hope to come here next year for the Winter Games. I feel very good on this track and I really like it.”

Switzerland’s Tumler was also impressed by the venue, following his giant-slalom victory.

"I liked the race today,” he said. “The organisation is very good; the snow is very good. I liked the atmosphere. The Olympic city is very good."

Alpine Skiing: Women's World Cup results

Women's World Cup alpine skiing results on Sunday after the final race of the season the giant slalom:

1.
