Tom was involved in the synchronised diving where he just wasn’t able to win a medal, so we will work on that, but in the 10m competition Tom managed to get a medal. With the level of performance out there it’s been pretty tough. Tom works like a Trojan and it’s amazing to see the hard work pay off.

How have you enjoyed playing an integral part in the Games?
It’s been fantastic, especially on home soil. I think the thing that’s going to be my lasting memory of these Olympic Games is the home crowd and the amazing support that they give.

What do you think the Games will do for the country?
It’s really inspired people to take part in sport in general. I’ve seen news bulletins that have shown kids going to velodromes and they’re being turned away because the track is so busy. That, for me, sums up how sport will be affected by the Games – the increased involvement. I think there will be a lasting legacy and hopefully we’ll go to Rio 2016 with some more diving talent. I’m so pleased that we pushed for hosting the Olympic Games.

What’s it like seeing athletes like Tom progress from the Youth Olympic Games to the Olympics?
The Youth Olympic Games is a fantastic idea because it gives young people the opportunity to be involved in a multi-sport event. You get to live in an athletes’ village, there are big food halls, other athletes from different sports and different countries. Tom’s been able to come here and focus on his performance rather than the hype that someone usually feels at their first Olympic Games.

Penultimate day of action brings more YOG medals

Medals came from Columbia’s Oscar Munoz, who won his country’s first medal in taekwondo by taking bronze in the men's 58kg category. "I just can't believe it - it's amazing. It's been my goal for my whole life. I'm only 19 and it’s my first Olympic Games. I just can't believe I made it,” he said, overjoyed. "It's the first medal for Colombia in taekwondo and I'm very proud to be the one to get it."

Medals two and three came in the Aquatics Centre as the class of Singapore 2010 fully dominated the men's 10m platform diving final, with both China’s Qiu Bo and Great Britain’s Tom Daley finishing on the podium, taking silver and bronze respectively.

It was a final of true Olympic quality, with twists, somersaults and turns all executed within 10m, and the crown eventually going to the USA’s David Boudia. At only 18 years-old, Tom is already an Olympic veteran having competed at Beijing in 2008 ahead of the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore 2010. He was overjoyed to win his first Olympic medal: "It's the one medal that was missing from my collection. It means so much to me. All of the hard work has paid off."

For Qiu, the night was equally as great, as he pulled off some amazing dives to claim silver.

The teenagers plan to rest for now, but it’ll be back to the hard work soon as they both promise to be at the next summer Olympic Games in Rio in four years’ time, and they’re both demanding a medal upgrade!

What a day for the Youth Olympic Games athletes and with more medal hopes on the final day too, we are all set to end on a high!

China miss out on clean sweep - London 2012 - Diving

The Chinese were odds-on to go one better than at Beijing 2008 and replicate their perfect record from last year's World Championships.

The sweep was on after the opening week of the Olympics when all four of their synchro teams stood on the top podium.

But two of the most memorable Individual finals in Games history denied them total dominance.

Arguably the most dramatic was in the men's 10m Platform on the final night of competition when China's biggest star, Qiu Bo, took silver.

Qiu had been unbeatable for the past two years and coasted to the world title 12 months ago.

The 19-year-old maintained the trend in the opening two qualifying rounds before he came unstuck in one of the greatest Diving finals of all time.

Great Britain's Tom Daley led deadlocked duo Qiu and the USA's David Boudia by just 0.15 points heading into the final round.

With a 17,500-strong crowd in attendence, Daley attracted a single score of 10 for his final effort.

The 18-year-old's degree of difficulty paled in comparison to Boudia and Qiu though, and when the USA diver produced a brilliant effort before Qiu slightly missed his a stunning upset was celebrated.

Boudia, who edged into the semi-final in 18th, was left amazed while Qiu stood shattered as his quest for a first Olympic gold was ended.

'It still hasn't sunk in that I had a gold medal, that I was standing on the podium and the anthem was playing,' said Boudia.

'Diving is extremely competitive and the rest of the world is catching up but they've stamped their feet on the sport, China.'

Four days earlier, Russia's Ilya Zakharov sprung another major surprise in the men's 3m Springboard.

Zakharov scored an astonishing total of 555.90 points to get the better of China's Qin Kai and world champion He Chong.

'I just can't believe it as of now. I have done it finally,' he said.

China's Wu Minxia equalled the record of six Olympic Diving medals. She completed a hat-trick of Synchro 3m Springboard Olympic titles alongside He Zi before announcing her intention to retire after winning gold in the individual 3m Springboard to equal the record.

On the women's Platform, Chen Ruolin defended both her titles winning the individual and synchro alongside Wang Hao.

The Chinese men's synchro teams were also dominant, with Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan defying their youth to win the Platform while Luo Yutong and Qin won the Springboard.

China miss out on clean sweep - London 2012 - Diving

The Chinese were odds-on to go one better than at Beijing 2008 and replicate their perfect record from last year's World Championships.

Sixteen-year-old Australian Brittany Broben was Chen's closest challenger, but even then she was still 55.80 further back.

Pandelela Rinong Pamg took bronze for Malaysia as she edged out a tight pack behind her with a score of 359.20.

Victory for Chen brought her fourth Olympic Games gold medal, and a second of these Games after she teamed up with Wang Hao to win the Synchronised 10 Platform last week.
